Spain: Treasure Chest of Wonders

From Bilbao to Madrid

From one of the wonders of modern architecture, Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, to Madrid’s vast and majestic 18th century Royal Palace, Spain is a treasure chest of wonders. Explore one of Spain’s best kept secrets on this trip that begins in the north where you can discover the Basque Country with a visit to Bilbao and the seaside town of San Sebastián.

Overview

On the way south to Madrid, enjoy the vistas and vineyards of the Rioja Region and the historic city of Segovia with its Roman ruins and medieval old town. Then on to the bustling metropolis of Madrid, a city of splendor and a showcase for some of the most famous artists of the Western World. Highlights include a visit to its Royal Castle and the famous Prado Museum. From there we will enjoy an excursion to the famed city of Toledo, the city of three cultures: Jewish, Muslim and Christian. A special bonus is an overnight in one of Spain’s paradors, a historic building transformed into a hotel.

  • Small group experience (maximum 23 travelers);

  • Liz Mitchell, beloved tour escort, will again serve as program manager and lend her expertise to the sites we visit;

  • Explore the famous neighborhood of the Paseo de Prado, its gardens, fountains and architecture, all in the neighborhood of your five-star hotel in Madrid.

  • Learn of the Muslim culture that treated Jews, Christians and Muslims as equals.

  • Take time to visit Picasso’s famous “Guernica” at the Museo de Reina Sofia in Madrid.

  • Lodge at a five-star hotel in Madrid and in the country at a parador, a system of historic buildings redesigned as hotels under the aegis of the  government of Spain.

  • Visit several UNESO World Heritage Sites:

  • Old Town of Segovia and its Roman Aqueduct

  • Toledo

  • Retiro Park, Madrid, located in our neighborhood
